Signups for May the 4th Be With You 2024 are a go! You may make a minimum of three and a maximum of ten requests, with up to five relationship tags per request. (Relationship tags are defined as "Character: Name (SW)," "Character A & Character B," or "Character A/Character B" and so on per the nominated tags.) You may offer a minimum of three and a maximum of ten offers, with up to five relationships per offer. This means a total of fifty possible requests and fifty possible offers.
When you sign up, you are choosing Relationship tags, as described above, which you would like to receive a piece of fanwork focusing on. You must also choose if you want a gift that is fanfiction, fan art, or if you would be happy receiving either fic or art. In the Optional Details box, you may list Do Not Wants (DNWs), general Likes, things you enjoy about the characters or relationships that you requested, and/or prompt ideas for your creator. If the Optional Details box isn't large enough for everything you'd like to include, or if you would prefer to go into more detail elsewhere, you may write a letter for your creator ("Dear Yoda"). Letters are optional. Note that Do Not Wants must be listed in your AO3 signup to be enforceable.
If you leave prompts for your creator, and it is highly suggested that you do, providing at least three or more prompt ideas per request is a good practice. Prompts are optional on both ends. They are considered suggestions, and are not mandatory for your creator to follow. As a creator you are not bound by your recipient's prompts. As a recipient, you are providing prompts, likes, and other information to give your creator information about a gift you'd like to receive. This can be as brief or as detailed as you choose.
You can add a link to your Dear Yoda letter but please do not link to a placeholder letter or a locked letter.
Do Not Wants are a list of themes, characters, relationships, or tropes you do not want to appear in a gift. List things you do not want in the Optional Details field. Your creator will be asked to abide by your Do Not Wants but we can only confirm those listed in the AO3 signup fields, as letters may be locked or otherwise inaccessible. We ask that you remain respectful of other people's interests, and that you are clear. (Ex. "DNW: Ewoks, underage relationships: neither character should be under 18, Luke/Leia" is clear and polite. "DNW: teddy bears, pedos, gross incest" is not.) You may copy your DNWs to your Dear Yoda letter if you choose.
Please note in your optional details box for each request if you are open to receiving treats and have the "Allow anyone to gift me works" setting enabled in your preferences (https://archiveofourown.org/users/YOURUSERNAMEGOESHERE/preferences) or state "No treats please".
If you have preferences about how to refer to characters with multiple names or about specific eras you're interested in (e.g. Legends, prefer Clone Wars era for this character, etc.) you should consider listing these in your signup or letter. Character tags are in their current format to make our lives easier wrangling the tag set. If you prefer "Din Djarin" being referred to as "Mando" or "Ben Solo | Kylo Ren" being referred to as "Ben" please say so to give your artist or writer a hand in creating a gift you want.
Double-check your requests and offers. Selecting "Leia Organa/Luke Skywalker" when you intended to select "Leia Organa & Luke Skywalker" will result in very different matches.
By signing up, you agree to to write a story of no less than 500 words, or to create a piece of fan art no smaller than 500 x 500 pixels that can stand as a completed work and does not contain your recipient's Do Not Wants. Works are due no later than 11:59 PM UTC (8 PM Eastern Daylight Time) on Saturday, April 27, 2024. Due to AO3 glitches and crashes, we strongly encourage you to upload early. Works in still in Draft mode at that time will not be accepted as fulfilling your assignment. Should you experience archive problems, you can mail your finished assignment to the mod email in .txt format or .bmp format and we will help you upload it to AO3. Assignments that are not turned in by the deadline will be defaulted and you will not be guaranteed to receive a gift yourself.
As a creator, prompts, Likes, and other information in your recipient's signup and letter are there for you to get ideas for a gift you believe in good faith that your recipient would like to receive. You may ask your recipient questions about their requests via the mods but we ask that you do not contact them directly. We also ask that you keep your assignment secret until after creator reveals on May 11th.
Keep in mind that Star Wars is a large and varied fandom, and there is room for everyone. Your squick is another fan's kink, your NOTP is someone else's OTP, your most hated film is someone's favorite movie of all time, and your most despised character is the next fan's blorbo. Avoid character bashing, kinkshaming, and ship wars in your sign up and when creating your fanworks. Try to abide by the "be excellent to each other" credo, or at minimum, the "don't be a dick" standard. The mods reserve the right to ban any participant.
Nominations are still ongoing and will continue through March 8th. (Note this is a day before signups close.) Please check the nominations post for formatting guidelines. There will be a delay between submitting your nominations and being able to select it in your signup. Incorrectly formatted nominations will take longer to approve and may be rejected, so do read the instructions before nominating. We ask for your patience but if your nominations are not approved within 24 hours, check that you have followed the formatting instructions, especially if you are nominating and requesting clone troopers.
There is a known bug in the AO3 software that will not display all tags. If your tag does not autopopulate, you can copy and paste it directly from the tag set, which can be found here. If you have a problem signing up, let us know as soon as possible. Note for 2024: There appear to be phantom tags inhabiting the sign up form. Please reply here if you have trouble selecting a tag that appears in the tag set.
Signups will go until 11:59 PM UTC (8 PM Eastern Standard Time) Saturday, March 9, 2024. We will put up a timer closer to the end. You may edit your sign-up until then.
The full FAQ can be found on the May the 4th 2024 profile on AO3. You can comment here with any questions about signups or matching, or you can send an email to maythe4thmod@gmail.com.
